HOW DO YOU HIT A SLIGHTLY HIGHER AND SOFTER CHIP SHOT?
To hit a chip shot that needs to travel a bit higher and land a bit more softly, open the club face slightly and then make a nice sweeping swing and let the club do the work. Cennydd Mills, PGA Professional from Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club shares a terrific drill and training aid to make sure that your setup puts you in a position for success. Cennydd recommends using a hula hoop, which you put as a ring around your golf ball. Use the ring as the guide to your feet position, which by walking around the ring will have your body line open to the target, but not too open or far away from the ball. Cennydd gives an excellent demonstration of this shot.
Hula Hoop Chip Shot Drill
A lot of people over complicate this slightly higher and softer chip shot. To show you how simple the adjustment for this shot should be, I've got a hula hoop which has been placed on the ground circling my ball in the middle. Start by taking your normal chipping stance. with the ball in the middle of my feet, nice and close together. Now using the hula hoop as a guide just shuffle my feet slightly around this hula hoop circle which automatically opens up your stance very slightly. Now your club face is open slightly. Now with a normal chip shot sweeping stroke the ball will fly slightly higher slightly softer.
